The American History Museum has been one of my favorites so far. There is something for everyone in that museum, from old cars to sports memorabilia and even the Star-Spangled Banner (no pictures allowed). My favorite thing was seeing all the gowns of the First Ladies.
This was Helen Taft's inaugural ball gown from 1909. |
Michelle Obama's trendsetting one-shoulder gown (although Nancy Regan's was a one-shoulder design, too). |
Kermit! |
We were exhausted by the time we were through with the museum. It was about 3pm and I was ready to go home, but Ty talked us into one more stop at the Arlington Cemetery. I had to take a 20-minute nap in the truck, while the boys went ahead, but I'm so glad that we went. I will never forget the feelings I had in that sacred place.
We watched the changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. There was absolutely no talking allowed. It was very peaceful. The guard walks across the carpet in 21 seconds, stops at the end for 21 seconds, switches his rifle to the other arm, and walks over to the other end in 21 seconds. This is symbolic of the 21-gun salute. According to Wikipedia, someone has been guarding the Tomb continuously since 1937, when it was first dedicated. |
After Arlington, we headed for home but got stuck in traffic (surprise, surprise). We were so hungry, that we decided to just dive off the freeway and find some place to eat. We ended up in this adorable historic town called Occoquan. It was right on the river and very quiet, compared to the hustle of downtown DC. We had a great dinner, Jack ate the largest french fry we've ever seen, and we got to play on the docks for a few minutes.
We finally made it home at 8pm and all went to bed!

How neat! What a great opportunity this is for you guys to be able to experience so much history.
Just seeing the cemetery picture I knew you were in Arlington and all of those amazing feelings of hallowed ground came back to me. I need to get back to DC and see the museums I couldn't do in one day. I love that you have the opportunity to see a lot and that you're taking full advantage.
